DYNAMIC LANGUAGE IMMERSION

Problem/Dilemma:  We need a way to practice the Spanish language and inquire about the Latino culture, without only having to read a text book.  Numerous studies have proven/shown that people are able to learn a new language faster through immersion.  It is simply easier to pick up a language when you are immersed in the country of origin.

Solution:  There are various ways to go about this.  Some programs that we can use include Rosetta Stone or Babbel, however, these programs/web 2.0 tools are often expensive.  Therefore, we will utilize SKYPE.  In terms of cost, this web 2.0 tool is relatively cheaper than the other 2 programs that I mentioned before.  In fact, it's FREE!

Assignment:  At least once a week, students must sign in to their allotted SKYPE account and converse for at least 45 minutes with their "e-pal"-a student from their designated Spanish-speaking country.  During this time, the student will be required to ask questions concerning the current Unit/Theme that we are dealing with as well as gather more information from the student.  Then, they will write the information in their blog so as to share with their fellow classmates.

Assignment #1
Current Theme:  Unit #6- El Restaurante (The Restaurant)
Questions:  What are some of the staple foods in the country?  What is your e-pal's favorite food?  How does their "dinner time" routines compare with your own?  Find out the cost of these foods/snacks:  an 8oz bottle of water, a 5-piece packet of gum, a bag of chips (specify the size); a piece of candy (specify the brand/size); the average cost of a lunch and dinner meal in a restaurant (specify the name of the meal on the menu, the ingredients of the food and the cost).
To complete:  After conversing with your e-pal, answer the questions in your blog.  Make it interesting!  Please read and comment on at least 2 classmates' blog.
